“…we are there with our cameras to record reality.
Once we start modifying that which exists, we are robbing photography of its most valuable attribute.”
— Philip Jones Griffiths

September 8th - Hybrid
The first meeting of the photographic year 2022-2023 and the Autumn Season. This meeting will take place in a 'Face-To-Face' (F2F) format at the Carmarthen Methodist Church and online via Zoom. This will give us an opportunity to get reacquainted with each other and take a look at the CPS Programme for the year ahead - we have two new ventures this year!
September 15th - Zoom Only
Speaker: CPS Member Ewan Richards will be presenting his Lockdown/Covid-19 project "A Sign Of The Times" to the club members via Zoom.
Ewan will be talking about his images and how they represent the era of Coronavirus (Covid-19), demonstrating local lockdown (stay at home and exercising locally), easing of some restrictions and places being closed.
He will then go on to show some more photos, interpreting how we got used to the‘new’ normal and started to recover following the lifting of restrictions, reopening of businesses and the ongoing problems caused by Covid, such as the ‘pingdemic’ and how some of the restrictions are actually remaining after 'freedom day' due to rising cases.
It’s all about how the photographer interprets the photograph in the times of the virus, all related to the sign of the times.
Note: This event will also include a Short Extra-Ordinary General Meeting of the Society

Speaker - Richard Young - Crossing Boundaries, Art & Photography
The visual arts have practitioners who are painters, sculptors, photographers, cinematographers with many doing some if not all of these together. Many photographers of world renown began their visual experience by aspiring to be painters, often trained as such, but this being a challenging field, changed their discipline to earn their crust, they took up photography, became art directors, opened galleries and restaurants or other creative endeavours. The artistic eye never left them, for example many photographers expressed themselves in similar ways, their medium of choice simply crossed boundaries. Indeed, much of photograph owes its eye to painterly art, many of the standards used to judge images are simply an extension of those used in the 19th Century Salons of Paris and London. This presentation shows how some photographers crossed these boundaries and indeed, I follow this pattern and share with you my practice, as a painterly artist moving into photographers, sometimes the boundary becomes blurred with traditional rules being challenged.
November 17th - Hybrid
Interclub Critique Part 1: This will be a 'new venture' for CPS - we will be selecting 10 images from Club Members which will be sent to Rhyl Photographic Society for their members to critique. The deadline for submitting images that members want to be considered for Rhyl PS to critique will be 12:00 midnight on November 7th 2022. Further information can be found on the 'Competitions' page.
November 24th - Zoom Only
Speaker - Terry Hewitt - Knowing Your Camera, Knowing How To Photograph
Using live view Terry will demonstrate all the key settings on a DSLR camera. In other words what effect do all the adjustments you can make on your camera have? I show what they do, what are the side effects, why do you need this feature and most importantly when to use it. The talk finishes off with the 40 things to do before you press the shutter.
December 1st - Zoom Only
The original speaker - Dave Russell - who was due to give his "A-Z Of Imaging" talk to the society is unable to make it and so we have a change to the programmed meeting this evening. Two of our members - Nicola George and Alan Harris will each give a presentation of approx. 45 - 50 minutes each to the society as shown below :-
Part 1: Nicola George - A Different Way Of Looking At Things (Revised)
I like making images that are a little different from the norm. This includes those made in camera, such as ICM and double exposures, but also manipulating my photos in post processing with textures, filters and brush work. I particularly like producing images with patterns and showing the natural world in an unconventional way. I will show some of my work with before and after images and hopefully explore your thoughts on creative photography as well. How do you view it? Do you create images using digital and/or physical media with your photographs?
Part 2: Alan Harris - The Post Industrial River
A Psychogeographic Study of the River Taff between Troedyrhiw and Pontygwaith: An Adult Exploration of a Boyhood Landscape in Image and Text
After a brief introduction to the valley of the Taff River in South Wales, and a glance at its industrial past we begin an Psychogeographic exploration of a short stretch of the Taff between two of its bridges. We start at Pontrhun Bridge in the village of Troedyrhiw and finish at Pontygwaith Bridge in the small hamlet of the same name. Throughout the journey we will look at the Taff itself and the way in which the river and its landscape provoke the author (and others) into responding via image and text..
December 8th - Hybrid
Interclub Critique Part 2: This will be a 'new venture' for CPS - we will be critiquing 10 images that have been sent to us by Rhyl Photographic Society - unfortunately this event did not take place this season but has been rescheduled for early in the new Spring 2023 season.
December 15th - Hybrid
This will be the Last meeting of the Autumn 2022 Season and will not be recorded
Speaker - Polina Plotnikova - Starting From a Blank Canvas
They say that a photographer is either a picture taker, or a picture maker…
… and I am firmly in the picture makers' club. While fully appreciating the "what you see is what you get" approach, I am much more interested in chasing an ever-elusive image that appears in my mind's eye, an image that conveys my feelings and emotions, rather than remains a mere statement of fact. My favourite photography subjects are: flowers, still life, and also capturing my impressions when travelling.
Polina has achieved both FRPS and an EFIAP photography distinctions and a number of photographic awards, including eight Gold and Silver Gilt medals at the RHS photography competitions, category winner of Food Photographer of The Year competition, various distinctions at each of the International Garden Photographer of The Year competitions, and multiple medals and distinctions awarded by various Photography Salons. I am proud to be a member of the Arena Photographers group.
